Removing the Influence of Shimmer in the Calculation of Harmonics-To-Noise Ratios Using Ensemble-Averages in Voice Signals
نویسندگان
چکیده
Harmonics-to-noise ratios (HNRs) are affected by general aperiodicity in voiced speech signals. To specifically reflect a signal-toadditive-noise ratio, the measurement should be insensitive to other periodicity perturbations, like jitter, shimmer, and waveform variability. The ensemble averaging technique is a time-domain method which has been gradually refined in terms of its sensitivity to jitter and waveform variability and required number of pulses. In this paper, shimmer is introduced in the model of the ensemble average, and a formula is derived which allows the reduction of shimmer effects in HNR calculation. The validity of the technique is evaluated using synthetically shimmered signals, and the prerequisites (glottal pulse positions and amplitudes) are obtained by means of fully automated methods. The results demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the correction.

Improving Voice Outcomes After Injury to the Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve
Objectives: The present study aimed to determine the voice outcomes before and after the administration of voice therapy in patients who suffered an injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve after undergoing thyroidectomy. Methods: The sample consisted of 26 patients (2 males and 24 females) aged between 18 and 80 years (m=55±12) who experienced injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve fol...

The true MR signal intensity extracted from noisy MR magnitude images is biased with the Rician noise caused by noise rectification in the magnitude calculation for low intensity pixels. This noise is more problematic when a quantitative analysis is performed based on the magnitude images with low SNR(<3.0). In such cases, the received signal for both the real and imaginary components will fluc...
متن کاملEffects of Voice Therapy on Vocal Tract Discomfort in Muscle Tension Dysphonia
Introduction: Patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) suffer from several physical discomforts in their vocal tract. However, few studies have examined the effects of voice therapy (VT) on the vocal tract discomfort (VTD) in patients with voice disorders. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of VT on the VTD in patients with MTD. Materi...
متن کاملImmediate effects of vocal warm-up exercises on elementary teachers' voice
Introduction: Teachers are a large group of professional voice users who are exposed to many voice problems. Vocal warm-up exercises (VWUE) can prepare the muscles involved in vocalization before teaching and can reduce voice damage in teachers. However, limited studies have examined the effects of VWUE on teachers' voices. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the immediate...
متن کاملA New Algorithm for Voice Activity Detection Based on Wavelet Packets (RESEARCH NOTE)
Speech constitutes much of the communicated information; most other perceived audio signals do not carry nearly as much information. Indeed, much of the non-speech signals maybe classified as ‘noise’ in human communication. The process of separating conversational speech and noise is termed voice activity detection (VAD). This paper describes a new approach to VAD which is based on the Wavelet ...
